Richard coached the consortia teams to success in competitive tenders in Building Schools for the Future programmes totaling £400 million in value. He achieved this by aligning them with a common compelling Purpose, generating ownership, developing their communications, digital media, bid materials and coaching team members. Through focussing the teams on a single Purpose, we
then worked to make the bids, behaviours and outlook of the teams congruent with that Purpose and the Values inherent within it.
Once announced as winners he further developed cross client-consortia cooperation developing a Partnership Charter and continuing to add value and innovation. The aim was to develop a Common Culture of Effectiveness between the local authority teams and the consortium. This was then followed up with other initiatives to turn those intentions into daily practices and forge
highly effective partnering relationships to flow across and throughout the project throughout its 25 year life cycle. Richard’s work on this project broke new ground. Up until that point so many PFI projects had been marred by strained and conflictual stances and relationships, resulting in wastage, poor communication and litigation. We were determined to nip those difficulties in
the bud and seed highly effective behaviours and principles at the outset to ensure that both client and supplier work as a cohesive partnership for the benefit of those who matter most - the communities and people who ultimately pay for and use the facilities. He ensured that these initiatives were not just lip-service and that they translated to the daily behaviours of the teams and integrated into the working processes. Stage 1 or a three stage process has since become part of the Government's recommendations for all PFI and Building Schools for the Future projects. These projects are currently ongoing. We will be developing screen and print based media to facilitate this process in other organizations and to provide an educational record of the project’s milestones and the learning derived from it.
